Canada loses 80 miles of permafrost to warming

Canadian permafrost around James Bay has retreated 80 miles toward the Arctic, most probably because of warming, according to Laval University researcher Serge Payette. The danger of thawing permafrost is not only its implications for climate change, but also the potential to release stores of the greenhouse gas methane locked inside vast expanses of permafrost.
