Lawmakers investigate effect of drilling method on environment

A House panel said it is probing hydraulic fracturing, a drilling technique that has helped companies tap shale-gas reserves but has also spawned environmental concerns. The move will help lawmakers understand the hazards this method may pose to drinking-water supplies "and whether Congress needs to act to minimize those risks," said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
