Study: States overburdened by generous pension plans

Almost all state pension plans are underfunded, with more than $3.3 trillion in long-term liabilities owed to current workers and retirees in health care and other benefits, according to a Pew Center on the States study. "[T]hese costs are already adding significant pressure to already stressed state budgets," said Susan Urahn, the center's managing director.
