UN asks Chad to reconsider peacekeeper decision

The Security Council is urging Chadian officials to reopen talks on the presence of United Nations peacekeepers over fear that an end to the mission will leave civilian and refugee populations unprotected. Chad has asked the force to leave when its mandate expires in March as the government has made strides in efforts to normalize relations with neighboring Sudan and to end conflict in the border areas.
