New locomotives bolster freight rail efficiency

The fuel efficiency of freight railroads is four times greater than that of trucks, according to this article. In addition, the carbon footprint of freight trains is 75% lower compared to trucks covering the same distance, according to the Association of American Railroads. And even that is improving. For instance, General Electric has a new high-technology locomotive that uses "11% less fuel than the existing locomotive average in North America," according to the company.
