Study: U.S. utilities lag Europe in smart grid standards adoption

European utilities far outpace their American counterparts in the adoption of industry protocols and best practices, like the 61850 substation standard, a research study finds. The report from Newton-Evans offers service-oriented architecture -- which is recommended by the Electric Power Research Institute -- as an example, noting a two-thirds of European utilities have embraced SOA, compared to 20% of those in North America.
