Study assesses surgical site infections after ambulatory surgery

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found a low but significant rate of surgical site infections after ambulatory surgery. The analysis of data on 284,098 procedures in eight states showed a rate of 3.09 infection-related hospital visits per 1,000 procedures in the two weeks after surgery. The researchers recommend stronger infection control practices.
