Edison Schools Faces Intense Scrutiny As Its Pofile Grows

Questions abound concerning for-profit Edison Schools' ability to boost academic performance in struggling schools. For example, standardized test scores in reading and math reportedly have fallen at Garfield Edison Partnership School in Flint, Mich., since the company took over in 1996. Still, some educators involved with the school say Edison's focus on discipline is good for urban children and could eventually lead to improvement.
