Florida higher education feels engineering pinch

With Florida's branch of the Scripps Research Institute set to compete with NASA for engineering talent in the state beginning early next year, the Florida Engineering Society hopes its program for Engineers Week will help to spark new interest in the profession. Florida lags behind other big states like Texas and California in the number of engineering graduates it produces, even as India and China turn out 10 times as many engineers as the U.S. does. To help correct the imbalance, FES recently launched a committee to promote math and science in elementary and secondary schools.
