Researchers to develop hardier black-eyed pea

A team of U.S. researchers is working with African growers to develop a black-eyed pea, or cowpea, that is more drought- and disease-resistant. As part of the Cowpea Genomics Initiative, researchers have created a genetic map of the cowpea that will enable them to accelerate the traditional selective-breeding techniques and produce a tougher version of the legume.
