Japan's retirees are a promising new market

Japanese companies are identifying a lucrative new market in the country's new retirees, a growing segment free from work with the time and inclination to spend on a range of new leisure interests and activities. In fact, a new study finds that people over 60 are spending more recently, parting from a general trend toward lower consumer spending. "Silver spending is a new opportunity in Japan," notes Hideo Kumano, chief economist at Dai-Ichi Life Research Institute.
