Freight railroads carried 46% more petroleum and petroleum products last year than they did a year earlier. This is thanks to drilling in various shale formations in the U.S. The shipments have reinvigorated Northeast refineries. "What we have lost in coal we have gained in oil," said Cynthia Scarano, executive vice president for Pan Am Railways. "It saved jobs."
