TransCanada plays down emissions claims from Keystone XL critics

TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline won't have the major impact on climate change that opponents of the project have been claiming, said Alex Pourbaix, the company's president for energy and oil pipelines. Canada contributes just 2% of greenhouse-gas emissions worldwide, and oil sands comprises 5% of the country's total, Pourbaix said. "Even if production from the oil sands were to double, the (greenhouse gas) contribution from the oil sands would be immaterial to global" greenhouse gas production, he added.
