Illinois Suburbs Object To Governor's School Plan

Suburban lawmakers and educators are said to be rallying to block an educational initiative by Gov. George Ryan that would shift money from wealthier districts to poorer ones. But lower-income districts are supportive. According to state Sen. Kimberly Lightford, the plan is "a step in the right direction to level the educational playing field." The plan, details of which were expected today, would transfer $500 million from state grant programs to a general state education fund.
