Contractor faces $450,000 fine for late freeway work

Contractor Granite-Myers-Rados faces $450,000 in fines for failing to complete the first stage of a $500 million freeway widening project in Santa Ana, Calif., on time. The project to widen 12 miles of the 22 Freeway started three years ago, and a preliminary agreement called for the contractor to pay a $50,000-a-day penalty for work not completed by Nov. 30, 2006.
