Connecticut considers plastic-bag fee

Lawmakers in Connecticut are considering a bill to impose a 5-cent charge on retail plastic bags. Under the bill, the proceeds from the fee would go to boost the budget of the state's Department of Environmental Protection. While supporters noted that higher charges on plastic bags in Ireland helped radically reduce plastic-bag use, opponents, including the Connecticut Retail Merchants Association, said the fee was wrongly timed due to the current economy and they called for a partnership of business and government to support recycling.
