Researchers look for biologic causes of plantar fasciitis

Researchers agree on a basic definition of plantar fasciitis but not on the biological mechanisms involved, including the role played by inflammation in the condition. Biopsies have indicated that chronic plantar fasciitis may not be linked with inflammation, and researchers are looking at whether it is caused by degeneration or weakening of tissues in the foot.
