Calif. district takes steps to meet the needs of the "whole child"

The Oakland Unified School District in California has taken steps to improve student nutrition inside and outside of school. The district has launched community-based markets, where families can access fresh fruits and vegetables. The district also plans to open a new meal-preparation facility, urban garden and more to help meet the needs of the "whole child." "Unless we take care of the whole child, they won't be academically successful," said Jennifer LeBarre, the district's nutrition services director.
