Tenn. House OKs local voting power in supermarket wine sales

The Tennessee House of Representatives has approved a bill that would allow communities that currently allow package stores or liquor-by-the-drink sales to hold referendums on the issue of wine sales in supermarkets. Local votes within these communities, which may be cast as early as this fall, will determine whether supermarket sales of wine can begin in July 2016. The current law allows supermarkets and convenience stores to sell beer with 6.5% or less alcohol content, but other alcohol can be sold only in package stores, which can sell only alcoholic beverages and lottery tickets.
