Company eyes development of facility powered by used nuclear fuel

General Atomics said it will start a 12-year campaign to construct a smaller type of reactor that could operate on used fuel from larger reactors. The project could partially resolve the country's problems on nuclear waste, as there is no agreement on where to locate a federal storage facility for the material. The company also estimates that there is a supply of used nuclear fuel in the U.S. to power 3,000 such reactors.
