Consolidation of sensor data can be a boon to industry

The Open Geospatial Consortium's Sensor Web Enablement initiative is working to consolidate sensors from phones and other network-connected sensors to increase functionality. Being able to share real-time sensor information on the Web could be a boon to science, public safety, transportation management and other activities, writes Steven Ramage. "Interdisciplinary and international cooperation, integration of research communities, and scientific progress and innovation all will surely benefit from bringing sensors and their data online," Ramage concludes.
