Shipping company must pay $1M over oil-discharge violations

Horizon Lines has pleaded guilty to federal charges and must pay a $1 million fine in connection with oil-pollution violations in Oakland, Calif. The company also will give $500,000 toward environmental projects in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company admitted to falsifying records after equipment to prevent oil discharges had been disabled.
