EU reports higher Listeria infections in 2012

An annual report on foodborne illness outbreaks released Wednesday by the European Food Safety Authority found an increase in Listeria infections and a drop in Campylobacter and Salmonella infections in the European Union in 2012. The report cited 91,000 cases of Salmonella infections, 214,000 cases of Campylobacter infections and 1,642 cases of Listeria monocytogenes infections. The reduced Salmonella rates were attributed to the Salmonella control programs enforced by European countries in poultry production.
