Survey: 66% of public employers plan to hire in fiscal 2014

Job prospects are expected to improve slightly this fiscal year in the public sector, as 66.2% of state and local governments plan to hire, up from 61.6% in fiscal 2013, according to a survey by the International Public Management Association for Human Resources. Among positions to be filled, 42% are in public safety, followed by 25% in public works, 21% in finance and management, and 18% in parks and recreation. In fiscal 2013, 11% of survey respondents expected layoffs, compared with 10% in fiscal 2014. Meanwhile, 36.4% of respondents plan to leave positions unfilled this fiscal year because of budget issues, compared with 42.8% in fiscal 2013.
