Tampa's retail improving as occupancy rates increase

Tampa, Fla.'s, retail real estate community expects slight improvement in 2014, said experts at the International Council of Shopping Centers' West Florida Idea Exchange. Last year, the closure of 33 Sweetbay stores led to new open space, causing rental rates to fall slightly despite the high occupancy rate, but some retail center operators are already finding their occupancy rates increasing again. Kalyn Brandewie, co-founder of Florida Retail Partners, is confident in retail's return, saying this year has brought "the most activity I've seen in the past four or five years."
