USDA advises districts to adopt clear policies on unpaid meal debt

Federal Under Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Concannon has issued a letter to state school chiefs in which he says students with overdue meal balances should not be refused meals or subjected to embarrassment. The letter follows media coverage of a Utah school throwing away the meals of students with unpaid balances. Concannon advises districts to adopt clear policies and procedures for notifying parents about any outstanding balances for school meals.
