Why WhatsApp avoided advertising, user tracking

When Jan Koum left Yahoo in 2007, a big reason was his frustration with Internet giants' focus on advertising and tracking users, according to this profile. In a 2012 blog post, he further criticized the prevailing Internet business model, writing that "[n]o one wakes up excited to see more advertising." Now Koum is joining Facebook -- an ad behemoth in its own right -- as part of a $19 billion deal.
