Medicare expands weight-loss surgery options

Medicare, which previously only covered gastric bypass surgery as a weight-loss procedure, now will cover three surgical weight-loss procedures for elderly or disabled patients who are obese. One of the new procedures covered is laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, with criteria to qualify including having a high body mass index and as least one weight-related medical problem.
