Columbia University engineers are testing a system of sensors that they hope will predict the life span of suspension-bridge cables. A key concern is whether the sensors provide reliable information. The researchers are testing the sensors in a glass-walled chamber that simulates the weather conditions experienced by real bridge cables. They also note that the sensors will provide a systematic way to regularly inspect the cables.
