Number of laser surgery-related malpractice suits rises

Physicians were named in 146 lawsuits involving claims of cutaneous injury following laser procedures, even though doctors carried out the procedure in only 100 of the cases, according to a study. Researchers looked at malpractice claims involving laser-assisted cosmetic procedures between 1985 and 2012. Nonphysicians operated the lasers in 40% of cases, and plastic surgeons were involved in 26% of cases.
