Virtual geography programs may doom field trips

In response to fears about teacher liability for school field trip mishaps, Cambridge University is developing computer programs that allow students to practice fieldwork skills with video clips and simulated outdoor environments. Geographers say the movement away from real-world, "down and dirty" experiences puts a damper on children's enthusiasm and curiosity.
