Feds, rail industry sign deal on voluntary safety measures for oil shipments

The rail industry signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation on Feb. 21 to implement voluntary safety measures for transporting crude oil. The agreement includes increasing rail inspections, improving emergency response planning and imposing a speed limit on oil trains when passing through major cities. The deal will take effect next month, and should be fully implemented by July 1.
