Massive truss to support WTC crowds, maintain open space

When engineers designed a truss to support the new World Trade Center's memorial plaza, they had to accommodate an 8,500-square-foot exhibition hall underneath the plaza. The truss, which is 88 feet long and 11 feet 6 inches deep, was designed to span the length of the room under the plaza because officials wanted to keep the room as open as possible. It will support the crowds visiting the memorial as well as the pavement and trees surrounding them.
