Texas DOT embraces sustainable roadsides

The Texas Department of Transportation has implemented a sustainable-landscaping plan for 29,000 acres of land alongside Houston-area roadways. "One of our main goals with the new landscaping was to eliminate mowing on the right-of-ways," said Dana Cote, DOT landscape architect. The Green Ribbon project has planted more than 1 million trees and 7 billion wildflower seeds since 1999.
