Editorial: Failure to slash military spending is government's failure

There's plenty that could be cut from the $700 billion the U.S. spends on the military and national security each year, but it's a sign that government is broken that the president gives this spending a pass, even during tough times, according to this editorial. The one effort to slash unneeded weapons from the budget came last year, when Defense Secretary Robert Gates killed the F-22 fighter and other programs, but Pentagon officials have said they think additional cuts won't be necessary.
