Pratt & Whitney announces layoffs, plans to appeal court decision

Jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney says it will lay off 163 employees at its Cheshire and East Hartford, Conn., facilities due to a downturn in the industry caused by the recession. The company said it would also appeal a federal court's decision to block the company from moving 1,000 jobs out of Connecticut. Pratt & Whitney expected to reduce costs by more than $53 million a year by moving jobs to Georgia, Japan and Singapore.
