Report: Global biotech plantings increased by 7% in 2009

Biotech crop plantings worldwide increased by 7% last year, with the U.S. accounting for 48% of the 331 million acres of biotech crops. Brazil planted 52.9 million acres, according to a survey by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications. The survey also noted that China, which grabbed the No. 6 spot at 9.1 million acres, is expected to boost its bioengineered crop production in the coming years, driven by the government approval of biotech rice and corn last year.
