China's drug exports slowing but still strong

China's exports and imports of pharmaceutical products grew in 2013 by an identical amount: 6.84%, according to data from the China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicine & Health Products. Total pharma trade grew more than 10% last year over 2012, but the country's trade surplus in pharmaceuticals dropped 12% to $12.67 billion last year, reflecting regulatory and quality issues. Demand for high value-added products was the principal export driver, while active pharmaceutical ingredients, which account for 46% of China's drug exports, slowed in 2013.
