Ham radio enters the digital age

Social media, in a sense, got their start with ham radio, connecting people all over the world via airwaves rather than the Internet. Now, says electrical engineer Eric Swartz, radios from his company Elecraft draw on digital technology to enhance ham's capabilities. And looking ahead, "[w]e're seeing interesting stuff going on in digital communication over amateur radio. It's effective in ways to communicate with very low signal-to-noise ratios," Swartz said.
