Nursing informatics roles are expected to grow outside hospitals

Nursing informaticists are critical to hospital IT, according to leaders in the field, and the 2014 HIMSS Nursing Informatics Workforce Survey said they are especially important when it comes to implementing and optimizing health IT systems and developing context for patient care teams. The survey found that 58% of nurse informaticists work in hospitals, but Siemens Healthcare Chief Nurse Officer Gail Latimer said that figure should decrease as health care moves from acute care to coordinated care and from large IT hardware to cloud technology and personal devices.
