"Weak signals" -- bits of information collected mainly through social media -- can have real value for an organization, according to this article. In order to get the most out of the signals, it's important to involve senior executives, develop employees' ability to "listen" for them and get the resulting insights to the right departments. Also, gathering signals from visual sources is a difficult but worthwhile pursuit.
