Japanese drug makers to merge, become nation's second largest

Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical and Fujisawa Pharmaceutical, major Japanese drug makers, announced their intention to merge in just over a year, creating the nation's second-largest pharmaceutical company. Company officials said the merger, which still would leave Takeda Chemical Industries as the largest drug maker, would put them in a position to invest more in research and development in the face of increased competition from abroad.
