MedImmune says 80% of its FluMist vaccine may be destroyed

Officials at MedImmune, manufacturer of the influenza vaccine delivered by a spray mist, told a CDC panel that 80% of its FluMist likely will have to be destroyed because it went unsold at the height of the past flu season. The industry made 87 million doses of flu vaccine for U.S. consumers for a season that got an early start this year and overwhelmed health facilities, but MedImmune sold only 1 million of its 5 million doses.
