San Simeon earthquake underscores need to retrofit buildings

December's earthquake near San Simeon, Calif., gave a striking example of the effectiveness of seismically retrofitting buildings and underscored the need to retrofit more older buildings, says a new report from earthquake scientists. In Paso Robles, where the most serious damage occurred, none of the buildings that had been retrofitted collapsed, whereas the quake's only two fatalities occurred in the collapse of a building that was not retrofitted.
