Public projects benefit from lower materials costs

Public agencies set to receive part of the federal stimulus package will benefit from the falling prices of construction materials, observers say. In San Diego County, economists note that most construction spending is occurring in the public sector. The cost of some of those projects is actually lower than originally expected, they say. El Cajon, Calif., for example, received a $40 million bid for a public safety center, which is $8 million lower than an internal estimate.
