Guidance offered on when to treat ear infections

Antibiotics for acute otitis media should only be prescribed in children ages 6 months and older presenting with serious signs or symptoms, the American Academy of Pediatrics said. The group's revised ear infection guidelines, published in the journal Pediatrics, advise a diagnosis of acute ear infection only if the eardrum is moderately to severely bulging or if there is discharge leaking from the ear.
