British parents to face stiffer penalties for condoned truancy

Starting tomorrow, parents of truants will face on-the-spot fines of about $186 for taking their children out of class for family vacations and shopping trips without the school head's permission. A spokesman for the Association of British Travel Agents said it was not their members' role to inform parents or enforce the rules.
