Brazilian novelist Amado captures essence of Salvador

Brazilian writer Jorge Amado described Salvador da Bahia, the town that became his home in his teens, as "the most languid of women." Amado welcomed visitors to his beloved Salvador but wanted to make sure they saw not only the churches, beaches and festivals, but also the downside to the city, including the "slum houses." Although much has changed since his novels were published, his words still draw visitors to "the most mysterious and beautiful of the world's cities."
