N.Y. Times urges EPA: Nix Mississippi flood-control project

Under his statutory authority to protect U.S. wetlands, EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson is prepared to cancel a $200 million pumping station that critics say would do irreparable harm to the Mississippi Delta. The Yazoo Pumps project was designed to protect Mississippi soybean farms from flooding, but environmentalists charge that draining thousands of acres of wetlands would damage the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico by destroying the waterways' natural filtration systems.
