Security Council extends East Timor mission, urges rebels to quit

Rebels in East Timor should lay down their weapons and end their fight, which earlier this month was behind the attempted assassination of the country's president, the United Nations Security Council urged Monday. The Council also extended for one year the UN's peace mission in East Timor, which has been struggling with violence since it gained independence in 1999 from Indonesia.
